If you’re a small business owner, getting sued might not cross your mind on a daily basis. But having a website without good accessibility really could get you in trouble. It happened to Seald Wellness in 2025.
Why is it that you can get sued for lack of accessibility? If your website isn’t ADA compliant, a person with a disability that can’t interact with your website can sue you for not accommodating their needs. So if a vision impaired person can’t read the content on your website because of contrast issues or because of a lack of descriptions on images, they could sue your company.
There are companies out there like AccessiBE and Userway that will add an accessibility icon that helps users request higher contrast or increased text size, and other things like that. But there is something you can do at a bedrock level that will help with your website’s accessibility. It’s adding ALT Text to all of your images.
ALT text describes an image so that a vision impaired person can get that description read back to them. It’s helpful for accessibility but also for SEO since it adds in keywords into your site by way of that image.
You have to add the descriptive ALT text on the back end of your site, usually in some sort of media library where all your images live. If you don’t have access to your backend, ask your web administrator, or reach out to me on my Free Quote page and we can work together to make your website more accessible.
Help those with accessibility needs, get better SEO, and don’t get sued in 2026!
